July gardening tips: Summer harvests
Rooftop gardening
July 04, 2013
I begin to harvest and store aromatic herbs in May, and many are already stored in jars. In the picture: thyme, marjoram, cinnamon basil, burnet.
I dried burnet to try it as herbal tea, but I admit that it was disappointing brewed alone: it's refreshing but it tastes like vegetable broth rather than herbal tea. I added it successfully to a blend, the 10 Herbs tea.
Cinnamon basil on the other hand is always satisfying: I'm using the leaves in many recipes and every morning I add some flowers in my tea.
I'm growing also broad leaf basil (on the left).
I prepare often the Pesto without garlic, and I froze basil for the winter.
This year I'm trying white gherkin: the pods are short, with light green skin, almost white, with just a hint of bitterness.
In the picture you see a white gherkin compared with a classic one.
This year I am growing only three plants of cucumbers and gherkins, but next year I will grow more.
I have also ten tomato plants on my rooftop. The Brandywine black (at the bottom left) is a dark variety, very sweet.
Another tomato harvest: the sweet Marmande in the center of the picture, the small Tiny Tim and the gorgeous Yellow pear.
